The Original

I felt the original was monotonous. It contained uninteresting additional animation and awkward pauses that could have been removed and nothing would change. I also felt the design could have looked more obvious. Without the sound effects, it was hard to tell what certain elements were, like the empty glass. The idea of ice floating in soda also felt unconventional for a child audience. The original and revamp had the same timeframe of four weeks.

Process Work

When brainstorming “float”, there were two main inspirations: objects floating in the air and on water. I moved toward the water interpretation, feeling those ideas would be more exciting to a child audience.

I created three rough storyboards. The first was a top-down view of a pool, with the word “float” as inner tubes floating into view. The second had “float” in 3-D lettering emerge from the water. The third was a fishing bobber splashing and bobbing in the water. I decided on and experimented more with the third idea, thinking a child audience would be eager about the bobber’s movement.

I looked at a variety of floating objects in water to understand the bobbing and ripple movements that occur.

I was inspired by flat Swiss Design for the look of the animation. I wanted the mandatory ABeeZee font to correlate with the graphics. Color was also an important factor for determining the animation style. I wanted something both nautical and playful, so I used a primary color scheme, with an emphasis on blue.
