The Original

I thought it would be an interesting challenge to redesign a past project I thought could use improvement. It was also exciting to see how much I progressed as a motion designer. I gave myself five weeks for the revamp, the same timeframe I had for the original.

When I was figuring out how the speech would translate to animation, I had two main inspirations: Jimmy Dean commercials and collage animations. What I liked about the breakfast ads were their type-heavy nature. I thought it was important to physically show FDR’s words. As a talented speaker, his speeches brought hope to many Americans. I also liked the simple animation techniques with a lot happening on-screen.

For collage animations, I was inspired by the low frame rate and textures, thinking it would make the animation look older. Like the Jimmy Dean commercials, I also enjoyed the simple animation techniques used in bold, stylistic ways.

For the aesthetic of the animation, I wanted a vintage style, something that looked like it came from the 1930s.

For the color scheme, I experimented with beige, black, and red. I thought of the limited ink options available in the 1930's along with aged paper being an off-white color.
